| 2011 Summer Youth Employment and Learning Program |
While the 2011 program has come to a close, year round activities are ongoing. Get a glimpse of some of the exciting events that led up to this year's program below, and be sure to check back with us in February / March 2012 for information on next summer.
March 21, 2011 - Thanking the Governor for his Support of Youth Employment – at Governor Malloy’s Town Hall Meeting in Hartford. Pictured are Deena Mundle and Charles Smith, Chairman of the Board, Capital Workforce Partners. Capital Workforce Partners was also represented at the Bristol Town Hall Meeting – with a CTWorks job seeker asking the Governor about how CTWorks could be understood as an economic driver – not an “expense.”
March 9, 2011– Improving Career Opportunities for Youth - Hartford Foundation for Public Giving and Bank of America awarded $250,000 to fund a project to encourage students to graduate high school and to prepare to work in a global economy. The award supports the school-year Career Competency Youth Development Program, an ongoing project of Capital Workforce Partners in partnership with local nonprofits and businesses.
The program will serve about 150 students ages 14 to 19 at the Weaver Culinary Arts Program, Pathways to Technology, Weaver High School Journalism and New Media Academy, Hartford High School Nursing Academy, and the Hartford High School Law and Government Academy. See all the details.

February 10, 2011 - A Celebration of Youth Employment at the Capitol - Governor Dannel P. Malloy (pictured at right), Acting Deputy Commissioner of Labor, Dennis Murphy and several key State Legislators joined more than 130 at the Capitol. From across the state, workforce development professionals and youth employment program participants gathered in the Old Judiciary Room to celebrate accomplishments and recognize the value of Connecticut's youth employment program achievements and outcomes. Key legislators and guests included Deputy Speaker Marie Lopez Kirkley-Bey (D) (pictured at left), State Senator Steve Cassano (D), Representative Tim Ackert (R) and James Ieronimo, Co-Chair, CT Employment & Training Commission (CETC).
Among the speakers, five youth stepped to the podium to share experiences and attest to benefits. The Governor and others underlined the valuable role youth employment played in their lives and the role youth employment plays in the life of the state. They pointed out the returns to society for career preparation, individual self-worth and the prevention of social costs and downstream expenditures. Many thanks to all who came out for a great afternoon for Connecticut youth. [Photos]

Attacking the Dropout Crisis |
CWP and OPP Team-up to Find Answers
A high school dropout in Connecticut will contribute $512-thousand less to the economy over their lifetime than their counterparts with a diploma, according to a new study commissioned by Our Piece of the Pie and Capital Workforce Partners (CWP) with additional support from the Nellie Mae Education Foundation and the Connecticut Office of Workforce Competitiveness. Andrew Sum, Director of the Center for Labor Market Studies at Northeastern University, conducted the research. He presented his findings at the Governor's Dropout Prevention Summit on October 19 and at OPP on November 10. (Listen to a radio interview about the study.)
