 |
|
| The Jobs Funnel is a pre-employment preparation and job training service for Hartford and area residents seeking employment in the construction fields, and serves as the model “Funnel” establishment for the state.
The name "Jobs Funnel," is taken from a process individuals go through – funneling into the system to gain specific work competencies and trade-related certifications. They then funnel out to embark on a self-sustaining and rewarding career journey. |

Jorge is the “Cure” with a little help from the Jobs Funnel and CL & P |
Several years ago, Jorge Alvarez’s life was empty. He had no goals. He lived in a one room apartment with his family and just
lived day by day. Then one day,
he decided to do something
about it – to be the “cure.”
He set his first goal – to be a
Quality Controller and get a
good job. That’s when he turned to
the Jobs Funnel – then th e Hartford
Construction Jobs Initiative. He
along with seven other men and two
women paticipated in the CT Light and Power
Company’s construction skills training program,
and that got him on his way.
The training led to a job at Home Depot in the electrical department.
At the same time, he went to CTWorks to get computer training –
because Jorge knew those were also important skills to have.
Lo and
behold, a job opportunity became available at Paramount Machine,
and Jorge interviewed and got the job where he worked 10 hour
days, but still continued his training both on the job and off. His
motivation and desire to achieve landed him
a promotion to Inspector, even before he
had completed his training giving him
a huge increase in salary which almost doubled
in five years.
In addition to his success on the job, Jorge
is now a community leader and In his free
time, he coordinates meals for low income
families in his home town of
East Hartford. He wants others to share in
the successes he has built for himself, and
help others identify their own “cures,” for
their challenges. Jorge thanks the Jobs
Funnel and CL&P for making it all happen.

Testimonial: A Bright Light - A Beacon for Others |
Winston Brightly was the first graduate from the Jobs Funnel to make it into an apprenticeship program and on to become a master electrician. And while his name – “Brightly” is just a coincidence, his pathway to success was not. Winston had always wanted to be an electrician after moving here at age 19 from Jamaica, but in order to support his family, he obtained his CDL license and quickly picked up odd jobs here and there, driving busses and trucks. Yet, he didn’t give up on his dreams.
Winston found out about the Jobs Funnel – then known as the Hartford Jobs Construction Initiative – and it was all he had ever hoped for. Free training in his first choice field of interest, coaching to help him through language and cultural barriers, discipline, motivation, and guidance to help him stay focused on his goals, and the ability to work through the 5-year process so that he could continue to support a growing family.
“I am going to make the most of this,” said Winston, describing his discovery as an “uplifting experience.”
And make the most of it he did. Years later, Winston now looks back at some of his projects with pride. The Connecticut Convention Center including over 900 lights in the Exhibit Halls alone, rehabilitation projects at the Hartford Steam Boiler Building and City Place, the casino’s Foxwoods MGM Grand, and schools like the Science and Medical Academy.
The Jobs Funnel is where Winston says “it all started.” Not only do you get set up for a job, you get to build a resume, you get new tools to work with and you get a lot of encouragement. They took care of me. And now, I am independent and doing well with plans to convert my experience to two years of college credits toward an engineering degree.
A future with vision, not only for Winston, but for all who follow. One bright light at a time. |
